Design Solution

An overview of the proposed solution which prioritises the user needs identified and align with effective pedagogical strategies and best-practice learning space theory and concepts.

The following will develop a design response that addresses the learning space issues identified in the previous learning space evaluation. It will begin with an outline of the design process before ideating a design proposal that draws on the understanding of user needs and prioritises learner experiences with reference to the critical application of learning space theories and concepts. It will conclude with a reflection on the design process and recommendations for evaluation of the proposed learning space.

Ideation is the third phase in the cyclical and iterative Design Thinking process in which of volume and variety of innovative ideas are generated in response to the previously identified challenges (Stanford Design School, 2010). A breadth of ideas are sought by combining a deep  understanding of the needs of potential users with the developing understanding of the problems and issues previously identified then combining this with flexible thinking, creativity, and imagination to reach possible solutions.

Rational thought (Identified problem + understanding of users) + imagination = solution concepts

To mitigate the lack of synergy available in the absence of a design ‘team’, idea generation involved an open mindset was cultivated in an attempt to meet the imperative to look for innovative and unexpected rather than obvious solutions. The development of a range of ‘How-Might-We…?’  brainstorming topics related to aspects of overall problem resulted in a number of insights (Stanford Design School, 2010). The mind map below summarises the main considerations:
